Immortal Strands? Give Me a Break
The "immortal strand" hypothesis proposes that asymmetrically dividing stem cells selectively retain chromosomes containing "old" DNA to prevent accumulation of mutations. As I describe in this Essay, such a possibility seems unlikely. An alternative explanation is that asymmetric cell divisions and cell fate are codirected by epigenetic differences between sister chromatids.

Self-control all too often fails. Despite people‟s best intentions and considerable negative outcomes, people often find themselves at the losing end of resisting temptation, combating urges, and changing their behavior. One reason for these failures may be that exerting selfcontrol depletes a limited resource (ego-depletion) that is necessary for the success of selfcontrol. Hence, after exerti...
متن کاملGive me a break: how telomeres suppress the DNA damage response.
Linear organization of the genome requires mechanisms to protect and replicate chromosome ends. To this end eukaryotic cells evolved telomeres, specialized nucleoproteic complexes, and telomerase, the enzyme that maintains the telomeric DNA. Telomeres allow cells to distinguish chromosome ends from sites of DNA damage. In mammalian cells this is accomplished by a protein complex, termed shelter...
متن کاملGive Me Another One!
We investigate the complexity of an optimization problem in Boolean propositional logic related to information theory: Given a conjunctive formula over a set of relations, find a satisfying assignment with minimal Hamming distance to a given assignment that satisfies the formula (NearestOtherSolution, NOSol). We present a complete classification with respect to the relations admitted in the for...
